Grilled Angel Food Cake with Balsamic Strawberries

Grilled Angel Food Cake with Balsamic Strawberries


  • 1 1/2 lbs strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons Fustini's Raspberry balsamic
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 angel food cake
  • fresh basil, chopped
  • whipping cream (optional)


Step 1. 

In a medium bowl, toss strawberries with balsamic vinegar and sugar. Let stand at room temperature until sugar dissolves, at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 2. 

Prepare grill for direct heat grilling on medium. Cut angel food cake into 6 wedges.  Place cake on hot grill rack and cook 3 to 4 minutes or until lightly toasted on both sides, turning over once.  Remove from heat. Spoon strawberries with their juice onto 6 dessert plates. Place grilled cake on plates with strawberries, top with basil and serve with whipped cream if desired.

  1. Awesome in season dessert!

    I was skeptical at first, who grills angel food cake?! But after the first bite, I was hooked! The grilling firms up the cake and the grill marks give it a little crunch. Adding the fresh strawberries and whipped cream were great, but the juice from the balsamic vinegar was over the top! Some of that stayed on the strawberries and some absorbed into the cake. A great dessert anytime of year but especially now with fresh Michigan strawberries!

  2. Classic with a Spin

    Strawberries with some type of cake is probably my favorite summer dessert. The grilled cake was good, but my favorite part was the zing of the balsamic and the bits of basil. And you can never go wrong with whip cream on top.
